The #1 Reason Why You’re Not Accomplishing Your Goals and How To Fix It!

You had a lot of goals for 2024. The beginning of January was full of excitement. “I’m going to conquer the world.” And now February 8th, the alarm rings and you just want to throw that thing out the window. So the question is what changed between 01/01/24 to now (merely 30+ days later)?

I learned a thing or two from James Clear: Atomic Habits book and I’m sharing practical tips with you!

I’ll tell you what…you were focusing on the wrong thing. You see, when you write down your goals, you are focusing on the outcome - the result.

But you should be focusing on the identity of the person you want to become.

Here’s what I mean:

If you want to be a reader, ask yourself what does a reader do? “Oh they read everyday - okay so I’m going to read at least a page a day.”

If you want to be a runner, ask yourself what does a runner do? “Oh they run everyday - okay so I’m going to run for at least 5 minutes a day.”

If you want to get a promotion at work, ask yourself what does a person that wants to get promoted do? “Oh they update their resume, network, seek informational interviews - okay so I’m going to start by updating my resume.”

If you want to be a professional procrastinator, ask yourself what does a procrastinator do? “Oh they mindlessly watch Gilmore Girls and leave their to do list for later - okay so I’m going to binge season 4 right now.” 🤣

You see where I’m going with this… so you need to flip the script and see your goals as a journey not a destination. You do this by thinking about the person you need to become to accomplish your goals.

Habits have compounding effects. Habits are a lifestyle.

The reason why most people regress after they achieve a goal is because they didn't have the identity of the person they wanted to become.

If your goal was to lose 10 lbs, and then you reach that goal but didn’t carry the identity of a healthy person, you may easily gain the 10 lbs back. But if you focused on the identity of “I’m a healthy person,” you would be reminded of it daily and your habits would reflect that.

So here’s to finally achieving your goals by focusing on the identity of the person you want to become!
