How to Actually Start Journaling - 8 Tips for Beginners

You heard everyone talking about the morning routine and one of the items stacked to the  famous morning routine is…. journaling. Great! Another thing to do when you’re already short of time. If you've been pondering the idea of starting a journal but don't know where to begin, you're in the right place. You know around here I am all about making things work for you and your schedule. I actually started journaling a few years ago. At first, it was here and there but after reading the book The Artist Way by Julia Cameron, I started journaling more consistently. She calls this process The Morning Pages. She encourages you to write three pages a day. I’ll repeat again, around here you do what works for you. I only do one page Monday -Friday. Look at your schedule and do what works for you. Alright then, let's dive into some practical tips to help you start on your journaling journey.

1️⃣ Find Your Journaling Style

Begin by exploring different journaling styles. Are you drawn to expressive writing, bullet journaling, or perhaps visual journaling with sketches and doodles? Finding a style that resonates with you makes the process more enjoyable and personal.

2️⃣ Choose the Right Journal

Selecting the right journal is key. Whether you prefer a classic notebook, a guided journal, or a digital platform, choose one that suits your preferences. A dedicated space for your thoughts sets the stage for a consistent journaling habit.

3️⃣ Start Small

Don't feel pressured to write pages at the beginning. Start small with a few sentences or bullet points. It's about building a habit, and gradual progression is perfectly fine.

4️⃣ Set a Regular Time

Establish a routine by setting aside a specific time for journaling each day. Whether it's in the morning with your coffee or before bedtime, consistency helps integrate journaling into your daily life.

5️⃣ Write Freely

There are no rules in journaling. Write freely without worrying about grammar or structure. Your journal is a judgment-free zone where you can express your thoughts, emotions, and ideas without inhibition.

6️⃣ Use Prompts for Inspiration

If you ever feel stuck, use prompts to spark inspiration. Prompts can range from reflecting on your day's highlights to envisioning your future goals. They provide a helpful nudge when you're unsure what to write about. I have a Pinterest Board with journal prompts that I use if I need inspiration. Go check it out!

7️⃣ Incorporate Gratitude

Consider adding a gratitude section to your journal. Listing a few things you're grateful for each day cultivates a positive mindset and adds a joyful touch to your journaling practice.

8️⃣ Be Patient and Enjoy the Process

Lastly, be patient with yourself. Journaling is a personal journey that evolves over time. Enjoy the process, savoring the moments of introspection and self-discovery.
